Every year Halloween seems to get bigger and bigger in Australia. This year I noticed the addition of huge pumpkins for carving at the supermarket, a larger selection of Halloween ‘candy’, an influx of Halloween parties and a local event my town had for the kids over the weekend.
Now I realise in the past I have expressed my disdain for this event because it always seems to be lazily done here. Seasonally it’s all wrong, but I mean we celebrate Christmas in summer, so I think we’re probably a little past that! While I know it’s probably unlikely I’ll be visited by any trick or treaters tonight, I’m sure I can rustle something up in the cupboard if they do come! In the meantime, I plan on catching up on some really terrible episodes of Pretty Little Liars and curling up on the couch with some candles lit tonight.
If you’re up for a little spookiness tonight and aren’t planning on dressing up and heading out, I recommend you watch any of the following: Casper (1995), the Harry Potter series, Stranger Things, Ghostbusters (1984), Get Out (2017), Goosebumps (2015) or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Finally, here’s a little photo of yours truly celebrating Halloween (or Harvest, as my school referred to it as) in the US in 1997. I dressed up as a mermaid – which was actually a nighty – and my friend Ryan went as a clown!
I hope you have a great night, whatever you do. Look, just eat some lollies in front of the TV and I’ll be happy!
