To celebrate my birthday this year I am planning a 90s house party! The 90s are my all time favourite decade, so it comes as no surprise that one of my good friends actually asked me when I mentioned my idea to him “Why haven’t you had one before?” GOOD QUESTION! I truly believe that nothing beats an old fashioned house party, so this year I plan on going all out. Below is my guide to throwing the perfect 90s themed party.
In terms of an outfit, it is absolutely essential that you get into character with this. One of the things I love the most about 90s fashion is all of the sub-genres.
For Brights I took inspiration from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Coloured shirts for the boys teamed with high rise jeans, reeboks and sunnies. For the girls, oversize is key. Neon hats and windbreakers add a touch of sport to this look.
For Grunge I was inspired by Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Johnny Depp and Drew Barrymore. My four most favourite 90s style influencers. The great thing about this style is that it translates to both menswear and womenswear, with the use of doc martens, oversize denim, beanies and flannel. To add a feminine touch, a hint of floral contrasted with moodier shades is always a hit. Accessorise with round sunglasses, dark lips and leather jackets.
Preppy is inspired by the 1995 hit film ‘Clueless‘ – think matching skirts and jackets, velvet, platform shoes and leather backpacks. Short skirts are the key here, team with knee length socks for more of a statement look. Leopard print was also a huge trend, as were butterfly hair clips and scrunchies. Play around with these elements and mix it up!
For food it’s all about classic 90s party treats such as cheese pizza, pigs in blankets, pop rocks candy, cupcakes, fairy bread, meat pies and coloured popcorn. To drink; coke and fanta for the non-drinkers and punch, beer (and lets face it, anything else) for those in need of a stiffer beverage.
Combine classic 90s pop hits from Britney Spears, the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys with grunge infused tracks From Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. Throw in a little Biggie and Will Smith and you have a well-rounded playlist.
Nintendo 64 is an absolute must-have, with Mario Kart and GoldenEye being the preferable games of choice. Twister and Uno are also great games for groups and are sure to be a hit as the night progresses.
There you have it, my guide to the perfect 90s party! Expect pictures from my own party next month, but in the meantime, please enjoy the 90s party playlist I compiled to get you in the mood!
