4 Easy Ways to Spruce Up a Room

Having moved 3 times in the last 5 years, one of the things I have found most challenging is knowing how to decorate my new space. Nevermind how much cupboard space I have or how big the laundry is – what colour is the carpet!? Will my furniture go with the style of the building or do I have to buy a whole bunch of new stuff?

Although I have decorated a few different rooms in my time (I’m most proud of my childhood bedroom, thanks TV Hits poster mag) to a certain extent, knowing how to make a house into a home can be incredibly difficult. From adding prints and artwork to making the most out of your accessories, it’s important you know what a little bit of decor can do for your home. With that in mind, here are 4 easy ways to spruce up a room:

One of the best and most obvious ways to spruce up the rooms in your home is to add prints and artwork to the walls. This is generally where I always start, as adding prints throughout the space is a great way to show your interests. For example, Jordan insisted we put up a photo of the Queen in the entryway to our house (at the highest point, of course). As you can see, the Queen is one of his interests. By contrast, I have a personalized custom star map of a memorable night in our relationship. I guess my interest is in him? Awwwww.

We also have a variety of photos scattered around, including a gallery wall comprising of some of our favourite wedding photos. With lots more white walls still left over, I’m excited to add some more pieces, particularly in Evelyn’s room!

Another great way to spruce up the rooms in your home is to consider the trinkets you have. Displaying little bits and pieces throughout your home is a great way to tie everything together. Whether this means adding a mirror, displaying polaroid photographs or styling a bookcase, you want to ensure you’re adding character at every opportunity possible. It does take time – I’m still working on our house styling and we’ve been here for 7 months – but I want to be truly satisfied with how our rooms look as we’ll be here for a while.

Although this may not be necessary for every room of your house, adding rugs in your dining area is a great way to bring everything in the room together. As we live in Far North Queensland, rugs work great in our house, because every room is tiled. Whether it’s your lounge room or bedroom, rugs are definitely the perfect way to make your house feel like a home. Not only that, but they’re great for providing warmth and comfort during the colder months. Not that I remember what that feels like!

If you feel as though your house could do with a bit of colour, adding a touch of paint to a room or two can really really transform the space. Having a feature wall in a room painted one colour is great because once you have chosen a colour you can then build the space around it. Use items that pick up on your wall colour and this will really accentuate your room.

Are you looking for some new ways to spruce up the rooms in your house? What can you do to add a little something extra? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
